When @tadeyemibooks writes at the end of ‘Children of Blood and Bone’: “If you cried for Zulaikha and Salim, cry for innocent children like Jordan Edwards, Tamir Rice, and Aiyana Stanley-Jones.” I feel the importance of the explicit links she is making to the world we live in. The storytelling in this book does not just come from the imagination of this brilliant author, but weaves in reality throughout the pages.
There are details you cannot ignore, even in the naming of minor characters such as Zulaikha and Salim - seemingly Arabic names - Adeyemi is not only drawing other communities into the world of oppression, but reminding us of how we must protect one another, particularly when many people of colour communities are subject to the violence of the state.
This is a remarkable novel and a compelling start to what will be an incredible series I’m sure.
