OFFER CHOICES THROUGHOUT YOUR DAY
Offering choices is a great way to encourage and develop communication with your child. Below are some tips to consider when offering choices; - Offer a choice between only two items. When your child is able to consistently make a choice between 2 items then you can increase the number of items offered.
- Make sure that one of the choices is something that he/she wants or likes. Make the other item something neutral or something that your child neither likes nor dislikes. Bear in mind, sometimes a child will not make a choice because he/she may not want either of the items. - Hold the items in front of your child (just below eye level) about 30cm apart.
- Ask your child what he/she would like (eg. “milk or juice”). As you say each word, move the object to help your child look at each of them. If your child is having difficulty understanding, you can repeat the names of the items and encourage him/her to look at each item again. It is important that your child looks at both objects so he/she knows which one he/she wants.
- Wait for your child to reach towards the item that he/she wants.
- As he/she reaches to take the object and say the name of the object (eg “milk”). Choices can be offered throughout the day, as well. For example, at mealtimes, play time, bath time, or when getting dressed.
아름
I love this mess of languages and I can’t stop to use all of them in my lessons
